What SS-31 is
SS-31 (also called Elamipretide) is a synthetic tetrapeptide developed as a mitochondrial-targeted research compound. Its cationic character and specific amino-acid composition give it affinity for the inner-mitochondrial-membrane phospholipid cardiolipin.
Molecular information
- Sequence: D-Arg-2',6'-dimethyl-Tyr-Lys-Phe-NH₂
- Number of residues: 4
- Approximate monoisotopic mass: ~640 Da (as the free acid)
- Physical form: Typically supplied as a white lyophilised powder
Areas of published research
SS-31 has been extensively studied in preclinical models of mitochondrial dysfunction, ischemia-reperfusion, cardiac disease models and age-related mitochondrial decline. The presence of the modified tyrosine residue (2',6'-dimethyl-Tyr) and D-arginine is analytically significant.
Analytical considerations
Standard research-peptide analytical checks apply: identity confirmation by mass spectrometry (see LC-MS peptide testing explained), purity assessment by reversed-phase HPLC at 214 nm (see what is HPLC peptide testing), and batch-specific documentation (see how to read a peptide COA). Refer to the Peptovia Research Certificate of Analysis page for live examples of the analytical format used for batches supplied.
